Description
The Mac McCarty Collection contains 11 archival boxes of the teaching, administrative, and coaching files of Martin J. “Mac” McCarty (1919-2001).
Mr. Martin J. “Mac” McCarty (1919-2001) was a beloved NSCDS biology teacher and coach of baseball, basketball, and football teams, as well as the athletics director for over four decades. In 1990, he began working the NSCDS Alumni and Development Office. Mr. McCarty grew up on a farm in Minnesota, where he had his first teaching and coaching position. He then attended Hamline College, graduating in 1941. During World War II he spent four years in the US Navy. After returning from the war he got his master’s degree at Springfield College in Massachusetts, graduating in 1947. That same year he joined the staff at North Shore Country Day School. As a faculty member, he initially taught biology and coached basketball and baseball, and soon after, football. He also established and ran the 10-week NSCDS Summer Camp Program. The Winnetka Chamber of Commerce named him the 1982 Educator of the Year.
As a coach, he excelled, with 214 wins nine league championships on the football field, 15 league championships on the basketball court, 395 wins and 14 league championships on the baseball field. His accomplishments each of these fields earned him induction to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1978, the Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987. After stepping out the classroom, he continued his work at NSCDS both in minor coaching roles and in the alumni and development office.

Martin J. “Mac” McCarty kept files relating to his coaching and teaching throughout his career beginning in Minnesota and ending in Winnetka, Illinois at NSCDS. He also kept records of the Independent School League (ISL) of which he was founding member and sometimes secretary.
The items were transferred to the business office during the 2011 renovation of the Upper School and then transferred to the School Archives in 2012 upon its official formation. School-related archives such as faculty files had been held unofficially by the business and development office for many years and cared for them along with the help of many volunteers up until 2012.
