Description

Replica Life Mask Cast of Abraham Lincoln formerly on display in an exhibit case in the Hall Library. These casts were made from bronze casts of the originals made by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1886. The original plaster casts made by Leonard Wells Volk in 1860 are in the Smithsonian Institution. http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_1368279

Volk created the cast of Lincoln's face in 1860 in his studio in Chicago. He cast Lincoln's hands in Lincoln's home in Springfield, Illinois, just after Lincoln had won the Republican nomination for President. As evident in the casts, Lincoln's right hand is slightly swollen from shaking so many hands the day before. Lincoln holds a broomstick in his right hand, slightly whittled on one side by Lincoln himself.
